Music by Hot House West Swing Orchestra
Let down your “prohibitions” and join us for an unflappable evening at the J for Shalom on the Range. We celebrate the Jewish Community Center’s Centennial by going back to 1925 - the era of Speakeasies, wild, secret parties, AND when the first JCC in Salt Lake City opened its doors on South Temple!
This party is going to be the bee’s knees!
Hot House West Swing Orchestra
The Hot House West Swing Orchestra is a 14-piece ensemble based in Salt Lake City that is redefining what a swing orchestra can be. Founded by musicians Nathan Royal and James Martak, the band began as a student ensemble at the University of Utah. Inspired by the music of Django Reinhardt, their studies took them across Europe, from late-night jams in Paris to festivals in Belgium. When Dr. David Baker joined the group their passion for swing music evolved into a bigger vision: to build a thriving acoustic music scene rooted in education, mentorship, and community engagement. With that, Hot House West became a nonprofit organization, and the Swing Orchestra was born.
Blending Gypsy jazz, western swing, trad jazz, and bebop, the orchestra features a pared-down horn section, a double-guitar rhythm section, and no piano—bringing agility and freshness to the traditional big band format. The band’s arrangements, crafted by staff arranger Dr. David Baker, honor swing-era traditions while sounding strikingly modern. Vocalist Hayley Kirkland brings showmanship and style, while Nathan Royal's guitar lines anchor us to the Django Reinhardt style.
Through initiatives like their Swing Renaissance series, the band fosters intergenerational connection, music education, and dance culture. Their viral videos and globally performed arrangements highlight their growing influence. With original compositions, acclaimed musicianship, and a mission to make swing music accessible and alive, the Hot House West Swing Orchestra is reshaping the future of jazz while honoring its past.
