So...three weeks into 2025...how are you doing with your New Year’s resolutions?
There are a lot of gyms out there with average attendance beginning to taper off, and I’m sure that new equipment you bought is cool, but is it collecting dust?
The age-old struggle of staying consistent and sticking to your goals is alive and well, but here are a few tips that might help motivate you to keep going.
- Remember that progress is not a one-time event Instead, progress is a bunch of little decisions made over time. If you are trying to lose weight, run more, or even just eat better, don’t think you need to make that change all at once. Instead, try to make those little changes each day. Think running for a few minutes then walking for a while longer, rather than forcing yourself into a marathon tomorrow. Think switching from two bowls of cereal to one bowl and some fruit, rather than eating only egg whites and lean chicken for every meal. Making those small choices each day will help you stay consistent.
- Remember that it’s okay to mess up You and I are both human, and even if we have a noble and important goal, we might slip up, miss a few days at the gym, and eat a lot of candy in one sitting. The important thing to remember here is that you can do better tomorrow, instead of falling back into the same patterns.
- Do not skimp on recovery With new goals come new strains so make sure to get enough sleep and take the time to stretch, warmup, and cool down with each workout. Drinking enough water and getting enough protein will also help you stay ready to attack your goals.
- Work with a buddy Goals are easier with an accountability partner. Whether that is your gym buddy, a close friend, or even a family member, helping each other stay consistent can be a big help when sticking to your goals gets challenging.
There is nothing special about New Year’s when it comes to goals. It is never too late to start working on a goal you’ve always wanted to chase, and it’s never too late to re-start one you might have abandoned.
