Three Ways to Make the Gym a Better Place for Everyone Who Uses It

You might have your own private gym in your home or go to a cool private gym where they pay someone to clean up after you and make sure the gym is always spotless. If you don’t have a gym at home or go to a super cool private gym, you are probably, like me, annoyed about a few things that happen every time you use a gym that other people also use.

When you decide to use a shared gym space, there are almost always a few rules to follow to make sure the gym runs smoothly and can keep running smoothly for as long as possible. Here are three ways you can make the gym a better place for everyone who uses it.

1. Re-rack your weights Any piece of equipment that you removed from its storage spot needs to be put back. Plates should not be left on barbells or machines, resistance bands and yoga mats should not be left on the floor, and while you are switching out cable attachments, make sure to put the one you removed on the dedicated storage rack. The next person to use the machine will appreciate that it was left clean, especially if they are not as strong as you, so they don’t have to put away your heavy weights. The next person to look for the cable attachment will appreciate that it is not on the floor in the corner, but easy to find, next to the other attachments.

2. Limit Phone Use Between sets, I know most people will open their phone to play a game or look at socials. In a truly empty gym, that might be okay, but if there are others using the gym with you, it might be wise to limit the use of your phone while you’re sitting on the machine or stand up between sets if you’re going to be on your phone and allow others to work in with you. This will help everyone have efficient workouts and decrease overall frustration.

3. Throw away your used sanitation wipes This one seems pretty niche, but when you decide to wipe down the machine you left a bunch of sweat on, take the extra second and throw the used wipe or paper towel away. This is much better than throwing it on the floor or draping it over some part of the machine for someone else to pick up later.

Following these three simple rules are some of the biggest things we can do to make the gym better for everyone. Next time you work out, keep these rules in mind.
