Our Programs Include:
Ethical Start Program
"An Ethical Start™" is an ongoing program in the Early Childhood Center at the I.J. and Jeanné Wagner Jewish Community Center.
The program is based on passages from Pirkei Avot, a classic Jewish text that might be described as the "original self-help book." Its teachings focus on how we can live a moral and ethical life.
Our ECC philosophy is children learn to act ethically when their environment supports and exemplifies ethical behavior. The program focuses on six themes to show a child ways to turn ethical values into ethical behavior. Last year our center in Salt Lake was part of the national "An Ethical Start™" pilot program. The Jewish Community Center Association, with generous grants from Steven Spielberg's Righteous Persons Foundation, The Joseph and Rebecca Meyerhoff Awards Committee, and The Brill Family Charitable Trust, produces this program. A generous donation from a member of our community has made it possible for our center to participate.
We are using this community-based curriculum this year in our classrooms. We use dolls, books, music, and other curriculum materials for teaching children how to live and operate in the world, and how to identify values like friendship, community, and respect for all creation.
This program promoting "Lifelong Learning" is meant to be a shared experience, not only for children but also for teachers, families and other members of the community.
Jewish Culture
Jewish culture and traditions are an important aspect of all our programs. Our integrated celebrations and observances include stories, music, art and cooking projects. On Fridays each classroom celebrates Shabbat. Our value-based curriculum teaches children how to interact in respectful and mindful ways with peers, within nature, and in their community. The program also introduces children to the customs and traditions of Jewish life, Shabbat and Jewish holidays through the integration of songs, art, stories, food and special guests.
Family Participation
Parents of preschoolers must give 10 hours each year to the Early Childhood Center. This may include, but is not limited to, helping in the classroom, assisting with a fundraiser, and driving on field trips.
Toddler Program
Welcome to the terrific twos! At the age of two there is so much to learn and so much fun to be had. Our Toddler Preschool will help your child begin to develop his/her emotional, physical, and intellectual skills, while teaching important social skills.
A classroom ratio of six children to one teacher is maintained, with the typical class size being 12 children with two teachers. It is not required that children be out of diapers. Children who are two years old by September 1st are eligible for this program.

Preschool Program
Preschool is fun! It is a place where children can expand their world, learn, grow, and most importantly, have fun. We encourage young children to experiment with toys and materials in a nurturing environment while they make their own discoveries. By trying out their own ideas and testing their thinking in a physically safe and emotionally nurturing environment, young children learn new motor, language, and social skills in a meaningful context.
The program also introduces children to the customs and traditions of Jewish life, Shabbat and Jewish holidays through the integration of songs, art, stories, food and special guests.
A classroom ratio of 8 children to 1 teacher is maintained in our Preschool classrooms. Children who are three years old by September 1st are eligible for this program.
Lunch Club
It's a special treat to eat lunch with your friends! At the JCC we offer Lunch Club for children enrolled in our preschool half-day programs. Eating their lunch with friends provides additional social opportunities for children and extends pick-up time, too.

Kindergarten Program
ABC, 1,2,3…it's time for school! The JCC Kindergarten is a full-day program that emphasizes nationally recognized early childhood best practices, such as skill building, academics, and free-choice activities. Reading and math competencies are developed through activity-based experiences. Free-choice time enhances social-emotional development. Other areas of emphasis include art, science, music, and social studies. Field trips and classroom visitors are also part of the curriculum.
The program also introduces children to the customs and traditions of Jewish life, Shabbat and Jewish holidays through the integration of songs, art, stories, food and special guests.
The Kindergarten has a maximum of 18 children with a teacher and an assistant. Children who are five years old before September 1st are eligible for this program.
Kindergarten Enrichment
Keeping your child busy, creative, and most importantly, having fun is our goal. Enrichment offers your child a chance to continue to learn new and exciting skills. This extracurricular class is divided into five different themes corresponding to school days of the week. The focus of enrichment includes sports, arts & crafts, cooking, science, woodworking and music & movement.

Special Needs Preschool Program
The JCC is proud to support an inclusive environment. Children with special needs will benefit from being regularly integrated into a preschool or kindergarten environment with typically developing children. Our Developmental Specialist, with our professional teachers, will create individualized goals for each child. She will also provide one-on-one coaching for children on a daily basis. The combination of specialized coaching and experiences in natural environments will result in rich experiences for all the children involved. Special Needs tuition is in addition to the regular tuition.
2, 3 or 5 day available
Specialty Classes
Expand your child's horizons! Specialty classes in languages, cooking, music, sports, drawing and more will allow your child to find his/her hidden talents, learn new skills, and have fun while doing it!
Summer Camps
Be a kid….it's what summer is all about! Summertime at the Early Childhood Center provides kids the opportunity to come play, socialize, and have fun with their friends. Our summer camps remain appropriate to the age and stage of the child's development, but are filled with summer fun—field trips, weekly themes, bi-weekly swim lessons. Full day classes also enjoy tennis and rock climbing.
Registration for summer is separate from registration for the school year. First consideration is given to children enrolled in the school year program.
